Snoring is the cardinal sign of an obstructed airway during sleep.
Constant snoring can have harmful side effects such as hypertension,
heart problems, headaches, fatigue and diminished libido. It occurs
more frequently in males and is often related to obesity, the use
of sedatives and alcohol.
The
dominant structures responsible for the noise are the soft palate
and uvula. The soft palate is the loose membrane at the back of the
roof of the mouth. The uvula is a grape like structure which hangs
from the lower edge of the palate. On inspiration disturbed air flow
causes the palate to flutter and vibrate like a flag in the wind. |
