Reports
show that up to 40% of sleep apnoea patients can be helped by
laser surgery. During sleep muscle tone is reduced and floppy
thickened oropharyngeal tissues collapse and obstruct the air
passage. These patients are carefully selected by clinical, nasal
endoscopic and appropriate sleep studies and the laser surgery
is only successful when the major obstruction is in the palate
and tonsil zones. Such patients will not need CPAP machines.
